Welcome to Beyond Words!

In February, 2005, BC's public libraries asked community members to share their stories about how a BC public library (or libraries) changed their life.

And share their stories they did. We received 350 stories via the web, email, fax, and post. All but a few of them are posted here on this site. The winning essays and excerpts from other essays were also published in a booklet that has been distributed to the featured writers and to libraries and their communities across the province (click here or on picture to right to download).

The stories were all read by a shortlisting committee that decided on 22 to pass to the final judges. The judges - Sheryl MacKay, Allan MacDougall, and Ann Curry - read the 22 and selected three winners and several honourable mentions.

The contest was sponsored by CBC Radio's North by Northwest and the winners were featured on the show, reading their stories. Cash prizes were awarded as well.

If you have any questions about the contest or stories, please contact contest coordinator Sandra Singh.
